• What we Believe. What guides us is the Holy Spirit and The Bible.

Lowe's Grove Baptist Church is a gathering of Christians located in Durham, NC, and we hope that you will come worship with us. Our motto is "Steadfast in Purpose," which we take to mean intentionally living out the purpose of the church by loving God, loving others, and leading others to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. In doing this we are stiving to honor the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:35-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

We want to meet you where you are and hopefully help you grow in a meaningful relationship with God, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We are people who struggle and hurt as we face the daily pressures of life. We are also people who are experiencing the life and joy of Jesus Christ in our daily lives. We would like nothing more than to have you join us as we seek, learn, and grow together in our walks with God.

Our goals are to love God and glorify His name, to love our neighbors through ministry and service, and to lead others to Jesus Christ through discipleship. We are committed to studying and applying the Word of God through corporate as well as private study and devotion. We believe that prayer is powerful and draws us closer to Jesus. Whether you're seeking God, curious about our fellowship, or attend our worship service regularly, there's something for you here. Our church exists to minister to the real needs of people with the authentic love of Jesus Christ! We invite you to experience the genuine worship, encouraging messages, friendly people and enjoyable atmosphere that are a part of our community. We hope you will come to worship, study and celebrate with us often. And, if you do not have a church home, we would be honored to have you consider becoming a part of our church family.

If you're already a member of our church, we hope you'll take advantage of some of the resources and tools available to you. In addition, information about ministries, worship service times and community events can also be found here. Our hope is that our website will be one of many ways you stay connected to our church community.

History of our Church

  1. Early in 1890, a Sunday School began on the porch of a home near the intersection of Alston Avenue and highway 54. Farther south on Alston Avenue, near the Wake County line, another congregation was meeting at the High Point Baptist Church. These two groups agreed to work together and become one church. On September 20, 1909, the Lowe's Grove Baptist Church was organized. The new church met in the Lowe's Grove School House. The Lowe's Grove School and Church enjoyed a unique bond as teachers and principals participated in the church activities. The Rev. R.E. Atkins was called as pastor at a salary of $100.00 per year. A Church Building Fund began immediately.
  2. In 1910, on donated land located near the site of Lowe's Grove School Agriculture Building, construction of the first Lowe's Grove Church building (34’x54’ with 18’ pitch) began with $299.75 in funds. Many pledges of faith, labor and material were made by the members. Records show the cost of church was $741.35. The Church was accepted into the Mt. Zion Association.
  3. In 1925 this little frame church building was moved across the road to approximately the same site as the present church. The building was remodeled with a stucco finish, the basement was added, and the cemetery was moved to its present location.
  4. In 1946 Dr. Charles E. Maddry, a retired Foreign Missionary, was called as interim pastor. He led the church in a dream of a new church facility. As a result, the church elected a building committee and proceeded with developing plans for the new church.
  5. Lowe's Grove gives to and participates in local and foreign missions. Several times when neighborhood homes were destroyed or damaged by fire, the church has assisted in repairing the damage or rebuilding the home. In 2000 and 2001 members participated in Yates Association mission trips to South Africa.
  6. Lowe's Grove Baptist Church stands proudly today knowing that with God's help and guidance it will accomplish its mission to serve well into the future.

Steadfast In Purpose.
